Heavy Equipment Mechanic

Job Description

This position is responsible for the repair and maintenance of all cranes, forklifts, trucks, chassis, top lifters and other cargo handling equipment.

    Applicant Should Be Able to Carry Out the Following Tasks:

    • The individual is expected to learn the safe operating practices for all of the yard equipment assigned to the HEO team and be proficient in its operation.
    • The individual will be required to learn the safe operating SOP’s for all crane and equipment operations
    • The individual will be required to learn and understand the operation of Mobile Harbor Crane and yard equipment in accordance with all safety regulations.
    • Diagnoses problems, repairs or replaces parts on any of the mechanical systems found in company equipment including brake systems, cooling systems, drive systems, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, exhaust or emission systems, heating and air condition systems, steering or suspension systems, and coupling devises.
    • Inspects equipment and identifies parts necessary for repairs. Sources parts from local vendors as needed.
    • Performs routine maintenance on all equipment including checking and adjusting fluid levels, hoses, belts, brakes, tires and clutches. Changes filters, oil and lubricates equipment as needed.
    • Troubleshoots malfunctions in equipment. Works with equipment manufacturer or equipment vendor to resolve unusual issues.
    • Works on diesel and gasoline engines. Replaces, rebuilds or overhauls engines or engine components.
    • Operates or road tests equipment after repairs are made to ensure the unit is in proper operational condition and meets all operational and safety standards.
    • Must become competent in all aspects of rigging and signaling.
    • Participates in pre-shift Operations meetings as per SOP.
    • Documents all work completed including listing all parts or materials used.
    • Assists in inventory counts as necessary.
    • Performs all other duties as requested.

Skills, Experience, Capabilities - We're Looking for the Following in Applicants

Skills

  • Knowledge of the mechanical systems found in cargo handling equipment
  • Knowledge of the standard practices used to diagnose and repair equipment breakdowns
  • Knowledge of the safe operation and use of equipment
  • Skills in problem solving and troubleshooting
  • Ability to read and understand manuals and schematics
  • Must understand the integration of computer control technology with the hydraulic and mechanical functions of the crane.
  • Ability to diagnose equipment failures, mechanical, electrical and hydraulic malfunctions
  • Able to use electronic and hydraulic testing equipment
  • Ability to observe the operation of equipment and ensure compliance in meeting operational and safety standards
  • Skills in the use of mechanical tools as well as hand tools
  • Manual dexterity
  • Skills in the use of diagnostic testing and tuning equipment
  • Good communication skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Good interpersonal skills

Experience

  • Hiring Requirements:

  • Experience in working on cranes or other cargo handling equipment
  • Experience in working with sophisticated electrical/computerized equipment
  • High School Diploma
  • Experience of at least 5 years as a skilled mechanic
  • Some experience in the repair of heavy equipment
  • Bahamian Citizenship
  • Competent in electrical systems and fault-analysis
  • Valid driver’s license

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time
  • Able to climb, bend, stoop, and squat
  • Capable of lifting 50 pounds
  • Must be able to work in inclement weather conditions for extended periods
