APD Administration Building Opens

After operating out of a temporary site on Arawak Cay for a couple years, APD Limited finally has a permanent new home.

APD staff members have moved into a renovated 25,000-square-foot Administration Building — previously an old warehouse on Arawak Cay - which serves as the hub for business activity at the Nassau Container Port.

For 20 years prior to the renovation, Arawak Stevedoring Limited used the old warehouse site to provide both administrative and warehouse support to container carriers at Arawak Cay.

Since the project began in May 2013, construction involved stripping the building of the pre-existing exterior, refurbishing all steel beams and girders, running fiber optic cable and conduit throughout and also raising the floor of the building six inches, according Felix Rolle, the Port’s Facilities & Maintenance Manager.

"The building required additional engineering updates in accordance with the Ministry of Works’ specifications for renovation from a warehouse building to an office building," Mr. Rolle said.

The new, modern facility houses staff from Bahamas Customs, various shipping companies, Department of Agriculture, Department of Environmental Health, and a security team.
